The inaugural F1 Esports Series World Champion was crowned in Abu Dhabi last night, after some thrilling final lap drama.
Brendon Leigh, an 18-year-old kitchen manager from Great Britain, risked a daring overtake on the last lap of the Grand Final to clinch victory and top spot in the overall standings.
Fabrizio Donoso from Chile was leading going into the final lap of the virtual Yas Marina Circuit before Leigh’s dramatic overtaking manoeuvre down the long back straight.
Leigh was one of four drivers who started Race 3 at Yas Marina Circuit knowing that a win would guarantee them the title. The earlier Race 1 and Race 2 took place at the virtual tracks of Montreal and Spa-Francorchamps earlier in the weekend.
Leigh also won Race 1 on Friday night but a poor qualification for Race 2 meant he only finished in P8, with Cem Bolukbasi from Turkey taking first place.
Starting from P2 for Race 3 and the Grand Final, Leigh quickly passed Donoso to take the lead. Donoso battled back and looked set to win the race and the championship, but for Leigh’s all-or-nothing move on the final lap.
The final race of the F1® season comes to a climax this evening under the bright lights of Yas Marina Circuit.
