Capital Choreography: DIA Emirates Hills Takes on Global Elite at World School Games Dance Finals
The global stage demands a unique blend of technical perfection and raw performance charisma, and the dancers from Dubai International Academy (DIA) Emirates Hills brought exactly that to the United Kingdom. Standing tall as the sole representatives from the Middle East, the DIA squad packed their bags and crossed continents to compete at the highly anticipated World School Games (WSG) Dance Championships.
The tournament leaderboard ultimately belonged to the UK’s New Hall School, who staged a historic masterclass to claim the overall WSG Dance Championship crown alongside five separate division titles. However, the real story for Gulf youth sports enthusiasts was the grit, versatility, and growth of Dubai’s own dancers.
A Four-Front Battle on Stage
Representing DIA Emirates Hills across a relentless schedule, standout dancer Aoife Hunt embodied the true athletic versatility required at this elite level. Hunt locked in appearances across four distinct categories: Contemporary, Hip Hop, Jazz, and Open.
For the highly competitive Open division, the DIA squad leaned into theatrical storytelling, putting forward a high-energy musical theatre routine that instantly caught the attention of the London judges.
“I really enjoyed getting to perform a variety of dance styles, as each one challenged me in different ways,” Hunt told Gulf Youth Sport. “It was also exciting to learn routines in styles that I had never performed before, as it helped me develop new skills and gain new experiences as a dancer.”
For Hunt, the pinnacle of the entire competitive weekend came down to that show-stopping theatrical production. “My highlight of the competition was performing our Open category musical theatre routine. It was one of my favorite dances, and I loved being able to perform it on stage with my friends.”
Beyond the Spotlight: The London Experience
While testing their choreography against world-class dance programs was the core objective, the tour provided the DIA Emirates Hills squad with a cultural and educational experience that extends far beyond the final standings.
Between high-pressure call times, the team took advantage of the UK setting to immerse themselves in professional development workshops and iconic sightseeing.
“The best part of the trip was getting to explore London with my friends from the team,” Hunt reflected. “We went on a sightseeing cruise, visited some of the city’s famous landmarks, did some shopping, and took part in elite dance workshops. It was a great experience to be able to compete while also exploring the city and spending time with my friends.”
Looking Ahead to Next Year
With the archive logs finalized for this chapter of the WSG Dance circuit, DIA Emirates Hills is already looking at how to bridge the gap to the podium next season. The experience has clearly ignited a competitive fire within the squad’s core.
“I would love to be involved again next year,” Hunt concluded. “The trip gave me so many amazing experiences, from competing on stage to exploring London and taking part in workshops. I can’t wait to hopefully return next year and make even more memories that I’ll never forget.”
