FOOTBALL: Trans World Dubai School Football U9 Finals

The second day of the Trans World Dubai School Football Finals saw the cream of the Under-9 players descend on Rashid Boys School for the right to be crowned 'Champions of Dubai'.

The day started with trophies being presented to the regular season league winners; GEMS Wellington Silicon Oasis, Dubai British School, Greenfield Community School, GWPS, Star Mirdiff, and Foremarke.

With the formalities out the way, the tournament matches got underway as the midday sun bathed the lush playing fields of the Rashid campus.

After three hours of high intensity football on fields 7 and 8, Rashid Boys School emerged victorious, leaving head coach Mr Mann delighted.

On pitches 5 and 6, Nord Anglia School fought their way to the Division 3 title, whilst on pitches 3 and 4, it was Uptown School who bagged the silverware.

The Division 1 Championship was an incredibly tight affair, with some teams – such as Greenfield Community School – being cruelly knocked out having gone undefeated in all three of their matches.

The two teams who battled their way to the final were GEMS Wellington Silicon Oasis and Dubai British School. A breathless match saw both sides play some fantastic, expansive football, but no matter how hard they tried, neither team could break the deadlock.

That meant it all came down to a dreaded penalty shootout to see who would take home the spoils. As if normal-time wasn't nailbiting enough, the boys then proceeded to put their parents and coaches through the ringer in what turned into an epic test of mental fortitude, which saw every player from both squads step up to the plate on at least one occasion.

After 24 spot-kicks, it was the WSO goalkeeper who emerged as the hero of the hour, standing up bravely to a fiercely struck PK.

Dubai British School will be heartbroken by the result, but will take inspiration from a fantastic performance throughout the day, and will come back stronger.

Upon receiving the Championship trophy, WSO Head Coach Mark was full of praise for his team: "We've not lost a goal all season, so I'm delighted the boys managed to hold on there at the end and get the result they've worked so hard for."

A full list of winners can be seen in the table below and a selection of images from the day can be viewed above.
