Hosts British School of Al Khubairat (BSAK) came away from Day 1 of the BSME U13 Games as Girls Football champions with a 1-0 win over Sherborne Qatar this afternoon at New York University Abu Dhabi.
It was a cagey opening five minutes with neither team really troubling the opposition goalkeeper. That changed in the 7th minute when BSAK rising star Sidney Venus found herself in front of goal and stroked home a cool right footed finish beyond the on rushing goalkeeper.
Despite a spirited effort and several shots on goal from Sherborne in the second half the host school hung on to win the opening event of the 2017 Games in front of a home crowd.
Venus heaped praise on her team mates ahead of tomorrow's netball. The talented Australian told Gulf Youth Sport: "I'm blessed to play in a team full of talented girls – we have an amazing understanding and have been training hard in anticipation for the Games. Tomorrow is netball and we will prepare in the same way".
