Over the hot Dubai summer, two performing arts students from GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis kept up with their training at UDO Academy Dubai, which is based at GEMS WSO.
Frank Tate (year 5) and Aston Mtada (year 12) are UDO Scholarship students and have now qualified to represent the UAE in the UDO World Street Dance Championships solo events online today (Wednesday August 26). The huge tournament runs from from 7pm – 1am UAE time or 4pm-9pm UK time. You can watch the event live on the United Dance Organisation’s Facebook page.
Thousands of dancers from across the globe come together to compete for World Street Dance Champion titles in front of the world’s best street dance and hip hop dance celebrity judges. The UDO World Street Dance Championships is the height of the annual street dance and hip hop dance competition calendar. This vibrant 4-day event is the most prestigious dance competition of them all, but due to the current global pandemic this year UDO moved the Championships online!
Originally, the Adrenaline Youth Dance Company Team from GEMS WSO qualified to return to the UDO World Championships 2020 to try to better their seventh and ninth place earned in 2016 and 2018 respectively. WSO Adrenaline Youth Dance Company will now honour this qualification in August 2021 and will train hard this year with the schools dance partners UDO Academy Dubai.
Good luck Frank and Aston! Your school, teachers, academy and everyone at GYS is right behind you!
